This is part of my Springtime in New York series ... there are many images that you can find here on my site. I was surprised to find so much of the natural world breaking through the brick and concrete of the city's winter face; a welcome sight after many months of ice, cold, and snow. No matter: spring is here, and the warmth of summer is not far behind! This was taken in midtown Manhattan on my daily photographic treasure hunt.

Take A Closer Look

Miriam Danar is an experienced street photographer who often enhances her work digitally, producing striking images, using a technique that I have not previously encountered. It is especially effective when added to images taken during or after a downpour.

The distorted light of New York street signs and neon lights shows a view of the city as seen through rain-covered glasses, the windows of taxis or otherworldly camera lenses.

The basic technique is relatively simple to master, as my first attempt at a 'Danargam' demonstrates, but a closer look at Miriam's work shows just how intricate the method can be, with each image taking hours of work to produce.

These three fire-engine red gumball machines, though hosting modern-day bubble gum, candies, and treats (hosted by an adorable puppy face smiling up at you!), cannot fail to bring back fond childhood memories of bubble gum machines, comic books, and Nancy Drew mystery novels, all highlights of growing up, for me, at least.

They don't make windows like they used to, anymore - these picturesque old New York City brownstone windows each seem to have a different decoration on top, making the view just as interesting from the outside as it is from the inside, looking out onto the street. A lone tree just beginning to show its leaves after a cold spring heartens me after a long, cold winter. It is almost a stained glass or a Tiffany lamp look.
